North Adams, MA - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's tennis team fell to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 7-2, on Wednesday afternoon. The Hornets fall to 3-6 on the season, while the Trailblazers improve to 3-4.
MCLA jumped out to a 3-0 advantage by sweeping all three doubles matches. In the most competitive of the three contests, MCLA's Jessica Dupont and Alyssa Keegan downed Lyndon's Savannah Jackson (Barre, VT) and Faibe Achinda (Hinesburg, VT) 8-3 at #2. In the first doubles contest, Briana Higgins and Mackenna Jordan downed Emilie Dube (Bristol, CT) and Oo Mai Be (Winooski, VT) 8-2. The Trailblazers took #3 doubles without dropping a game.
The Hornets fared better in singles play. In the match of the day, Dube knocked off Dupont 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) at first singles. Xiaochun Li (Bennington, VT) was Lyndon's other winner, taking the #6 match from MCLA's Ashlee Bartels 6-3, 6-0. MCLA captured the other four singles flights in straight sets. In one of the day's best matches, #5 singles, Keegan downed the Hornets' Susmita Mangar (Winooski, VT) in two very competitive sets, 7-5, 6-3.
The Hornets will wrap up the regular season with a pair of North Atlantic Conference matches at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center this weekend. On Saturday, SUNY Delhi comes to Lyndon for a 2:00 pm start. Sunday be Senior Day, and will feature a rematch with the Trailblazers, this time with NAC playoff implications.
The Hornets have a chance to earn a berth in the North Atlantic Conference Championship Tournament this weekend. A Hornet victory over Delhi, combined with a MCLA victory over NVU-Johnson on Saturday, would put the Hornets in the playoffs for the second consecutive year. On Sunday Lyndon can earn the #3 seed, regardless of Saturday's results, if they can knock off MCLA.
