Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's soccer team couldn't keep up with SUNY Canton on Saturday afternoon, falling 8-0 in their first North Atlantic Conference match of the season. The visiting Roos improve to 2-4-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in NAC play, while the Hornets remain winless in six games this season.
Canton got on the scoreboard in the 10th minute when Madison Rowe knocked home a deflection off of a corner kick. Row's breakaway goal in the 22nd minute made it 2-0. Kayla Phillips made it 3-0 when she was able to get past a Hornet defender and fire a shot past Lyndon goalkeeper Victoria McCormack (East Lyme, CT) in the 36th minute. Logan Green then received a through ball from Madison Seguin and got behind the Lyndon defense for another breakaway goal to make it 4-0, Canton at half.
Row completed her hat trick when she took advantage of a Hornet giveaway, dribbled in, and put a shot past Lyndon relief keeper Lauren Young (Concord, VT) in the 54th minute. Sarah Riedel and Morgan Rodriguez added goals, then Caitly Gerrard completed the scoring in the 84th minute when she converted a penalty kick after Lyndon was whistled for a hand ball in the box.
The Roos outshot the Hornets 20-6 in the game. Mccormack and Young combined to make seven saves in goal for Lyndon, while Canton's Victoria Hanna made two stops to pick up the win and record the clean sheet.
The Hornets will travel to the University of Maine at Presque Isle next Saturday for a 2:30 pm North Atlantic Conference matchup.
