Schenectady, NY - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's basketball team dropped a 101-59 decision to Union College in the first round of Union's 34th annual Sig Makofski Invitational Tournament. The Hornets fall to 2-3 on the season while the Dutchmen are unbeaten in two starts.
Union, the two-time defending Liberty League champions, eased out to a 39-31 halftime advantage. After Ricky Shuford (Prattville, AL) converted a pair of free throws to bring the Hornets within 44-37 with 18:02 remaining, the Dutchmen went on an 11-0 run to break the game open. Lyndon was never able to mount a charge, and Union continued to pull away the remainder of the half.
Shooting and lack thereof was the story of the night, as Union converted 39 of 70 (55.7%) shots, including 15 of 27 (55.6%) from behind the three-point arc. Meanwhile the Hornets were only able to connect on 24 of 71 (33.8%) shots, including only 6 of 25 (24.0%) from deep. Union also held a 57-28 rebounding advantage and recorded 23 assists compared to only nine for Lyndon.
Mike Concannon led a balanced Union attack with 16 points and five assists, while Kevin Jefferson and Ben Lee added 14 and 12 points respectively. Andrew Laub pulled down a game high 11 rebounds. Kevin Love (Bristol, CT) was Lyndon's only double figure scorer with 18 points. Jahleel Gabriel (Springfield, MA) and Zach Falkenburg (Kirkville, NY) pulled down five rebounds each for the Hornets, while Luke Fredsell (Whitesboro, NY) dished out three assists.
The Hornets will face Castleton University in Sunday's consolation game. Tip-off at Union will be 2:00 pm. Union will face Westfield State University in the 4:00 pm championship game. Westfield was a 76-52 winner in Saturday's first contest.
