Fisher pulls away from Hornet men in season opener

Lyndonville, VT - Fisher College used a 19-5 run early in the second half to break open a close game and defeat Lyndon State College, 108-79, in the Hornets' season opener.  Fisher, an NAIA Division II school, improved to 3-2 with the win.

After Zach Knowlton (Franconia, NH) hit a three-pointer for the season's first basket the visiting Falcons ran off the next 12 points to take an early 12-3 lead in the contest.  After another Knowlton three brought Lyndon within 16-8, Fisher went on another 9-0 run to open up a 25-8 advantage less than ten minutes into the contest.  The Hornets then climbed back into the game, and when Kevin Love (Bristol, CT) scored off of a feed from Knowlton Lyndon was within 30-24.  Another 9-0 Fisher run pushed the lead back to 13, but Lyndon again responded and an Alexis Ravelo (Lowell, MA) layup cut the deficit to 48-42 with 40 seconds remaining in the opening half.  Anthony Kellum's (Los Angeles, CA) layup sent Fisher into the half with a 50-42 advantage.

Two Darnay Gray (Mashantucket, CT) free throws opened the second half, but Fisher then went on its decisive run to extend the lead to 20 at 69-49 with 14 minutes remaining, and the Hornets never threatened the rest of the way.

Jamontay Thompson (Apopka, FL) led the Falcons with 22 points and 12 rebounds.  Brandon Rembert (Camden, NJ) added 20 points, eight assists, and four steals.  Kellum chipped in 16 points and Mena Yacoub (Clermont, FL) added 15 on 5/9 shooting from three point range.  Knowlton and Love led Lyndon with 11 points each, with Love adding 11 rebounds.

Lyndon will return to action this weekend at the Coaches vs Cancer Tip-Off Classic in Bristol, CT.  The Hornets will play Connecticut College on Saturday at 6:00 pm at the United States Coast Guard Academy.  Then on Sunday they will face Coast Guard at Connecticut College at 4:00 pm.  Lyndon returns home on November 28th, when they open North Atlantic conference play against Green Mountain College.  Fisher's next game will be at Dean College on November 21st.
