Hornets complete weekend sweep, top Eagles
BANGOR, Maine – The Lyndon State College men's basketball team finished out a successful weekend in Maine with a 71-70 North Atlantic Conference victory over Husson University Saturday afternoon.  The Hornets picked up an overtime win at Maine Maritime Friday night.

A slow start saw the early score at 8-5 in favor of the Eagles at 13:30.  The Hornets then began to pull away as they continued to force the Eagles into taking contested shots, going up 20-14 at 7:39.

Lyndon stretched it out to 29-20 on a three from Charles Correa, Jr. (Prospect Heights, R.I.) with 5:15 left in the half but Husson closed the gap to 31-27 thanks to seven points from Eli Itkin.  A jumper from Eric Vargas (Lowell, Mass.) put Lyndon up 33-27 going into the break.

The Eagles scored seven straight points at the beginning of the second half to take the 34-33 lead, forcing a timeout from the Hornets.  The hosts went on to score five more points before Vargas stopped the bleeding with a score in the lane.

Lyndon retook the lead after back-to-back treys from Correa, 43-42 with 12:52 on the clock.  After trading layups, Lyndon was on top again and began to stretch the lead out as they continued to hit from downtown.

A three-point play from Xavier Colbert (Manassas, Va.) made it a three possession game with 1:01 to play.  The Hornets hit two of four from the charity stripe down the stretch to hold on for the victory as a three from Raheem Anderson as time expired brought the score to 71-70.

Correa went 5-for-7 from behind the arc to finish with 21 points for the Hornets.  Vargas added 16 points shooting 7-for-8 from the field while recording four assists, two steals, and zero turnovers.  Colbert and Josiah Woodruff (Washington, D.C.) chipped in 11 points apiece.

Raheem Anderson had a game-high 25 points for the Eagles.

Lyndon hosts Colby-Sawyer Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m.

Husson will face Castleton in an away game on Friday January 20 at 5:30 p.m.
