Hornets pull away from Lesley for non-conference victory

Cambridge, MA - The Lyndon State College women's basketball team methodically pulled away from Lesley University for a 69-47 non-conference win on Sunday afternoon.  The Hornets improve to 9-5 overall with the win, while the Lynx fall to 2-11 with the loss.

The two teams competed on even terms for most of the first quarter.  With Lyndon leading 13-12 late in the quarter, Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, VT) finished her own miss, then followed with a three-pointer to give the Hornets an 18-12 lead after one.

With the Hornets still holding a six-point advantage, 27-21, midway through the second quarter, Hodge collected an offensive rebound and scored, promptimg a Lynx timeout.  Following the timeout the Hornets forced a Lesley turnover, then Alexis Britch (Essex Junction, VT) converted a layup to extend the advantage to 10 and triggering a closing 10-3 run that sent Lyndon into halftime with a 37-24 lead.

Alisha Celley (Cabot, VT) knocked down a jumper to open the second half.  Following a three from Lesley's McKenna Straube (Junction City, OR), Megan Johnston (Concord, NH) scored on a putback and Celley connected on another jumper to extend the lead to 43-27.  Lesley never threatened the rest of the way, as the Hornets built a lead of as much as 24 points before settling for the 22-point win.

Hodge led Lyndon with 24 points and 14 rebounds, her 15th consecutive double double, a streak dating back to the final game of last season.  Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, NH) added 14 points, connecting on three of six three-point attempts.  Celley chipped in 11 points, while Britch added 10 points and a team best six assists.  Dakota Jones (Torrance, CA) led Lesley with 10 points and 17 rebounds.  Linda Wallentine (Monroe Township, NJ) also scored 10 points for the Lynx.

Lyndon returns to North Atlantic Conference play when they host Maine Maritime Academy on Friday evening at 5:30 pm.  Lesley travels to Newbury College on Tuesday.
