Hornets triumphant over Panthers in non-conference action

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's basketball team faced off in non-conference action against Plymouth State University Thursday evening, taking the contest 67-52 in Stannard Gymnasium.

The Hornets got on the board first with a jump-shot and layup from Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.) and Faith Richard (Acushnet, Mass.), respectively.  After two free throws from Jess Conant (Canton, Maine) and a jump-shot from Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.), the Panthers tied it up.  With seven lead changes the Panthers would take the 17-15 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Gabrielle Foy (Wilton, Maine) tied it up again for the Hornets, but soon after Leah Swanson (Atkinson, N.H.) got in the lane for a layup, pulling the Panthers slightly ahead again.  The Hornets drilled in five points making it 22-19 with 4:07 left in the second quarter.  The Panthers finished out the quarter with four more points to the Hornets five, with the half ending in favor of the Hornets.

The Panthers trailed the Hornets by two twice at the beginning of the third; however, the Hornets pulled ahead collecting 23 to the Panthers 12.

The Panthers found themselves behind by 15 at the start of the fourth, 50-35.  They went on a 5-0 run until Richard found Foy beyond the arc, knocking it down to slow the rally.  The Panthers closed the gap to eight at 56-48 with 3:14 remaining, but the Hornets finished out strong holding the Panthers to only four more points as they tallied 11 points in the final minutes, collecting the 67-52 victory.

Hodge collected her fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds while adding 3 blocks.  Foy and Mariah Ramos (Lebanon, N.H.) pitched in 12 and 10 points, respectively.

DeAsia Lawrence (Middleton, Conn.) led the Panthers offensively with 19 points.  Wyland added 11 points and 3 rebounds.
