Hornets Successful in Season Opener over Lesley

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – With new head coach Sean Lynch at the reigns, the Lyndon State College women's basketball team started off the 2016-2017 season with a 68-57 win over Lesley University at home.

Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.) paved the way for the Hornets with a double-double of 30 points and 13 rebounds.  Faith Richard (Acushnet, Mass.) added 12 points along with Alexis Britch (Essex Junction, Vt.) pitching in 10 points and 4 blocks. 
The Lynx were led by Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) who recorded 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Dakota Jones (Torrance, Calif.) who added 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lynx went on a 4-0 run on the back of Jones until Hodge knocked in a pair of free throws. The Hornets answered nine to the Lynx seven to tie the game at 11-11.  The remainder of the first quarter saw multiple lead changes ending 21-18 in favor of the Lynx.
In the second quarter, the Hornets outshined the Lynx 21-12, pulling ahead and finishing the first half up 39-33.

The Hornets held onto the lead until Pereira drained a three, pushing the Lynx ahead by one with 2:09 left in the third quarter.  After a pair of free throws from Hodge and a three-pointer from Richard, the Lynx answered with a jump shot by Abby Henderson to knot the game 50-50 at the end of the third.

The first two minutes of the final quarter were held at a stand-still until Mariah Ramos (Lebanon, N.H.) tossed in a layup for the Hornets.  There were four lead changes until the Hornets mounted a 10-0 run to pull ahead 64-55.  The Hornets then went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to finish out the game with the 68-57 victory.

Lyndon (1-0, 0-0 NAC) travels to Lasell College on Saturday, November 19th with a 1:00 p.m. tip.

Lesley (0-1, 0-0 NECC) hosts Eastern Nazarene College on Thursday, November 17th at 8:00 p.m.
