Gators Seize Win Over Hornets in Final Minutes

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – In a non-conference tilt, the Lyndon State College Women's Basketball team played host to Pine Manor.  The victor would be decided in the final minutes, and it was Pine Manor who came on top at 66-63.

For the Hornets, Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.) recorded her sixth straight double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds.  Aimee Thompson (Barnet, Vt.) was just shy of one with 9 points and 10 rebounds.  Victoria Carlson (East Haven, Conn.) pitched in 14 points and 3 rebounds.

The Gators were led by Alexis Lee with 19 points and 4 rebounds along with Khiyana Isaac's 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Isaac started the game off for the Gators with a jump shot with Hodge answering back on the next play.  Lee then banked in a layup, but Hodge answered back once again with a jump shot.  After a free throw and layup pulled the Gators ahead to 7-4.  The Hornets would then go on a 10-0 run pushing the score to 14-7 until a foul was made by Thompson and Isaac made one of two free throws.  In the final three minutes of the first quarter, the Hornets scored four to the Gators five, giving the Hornets an advantage of 18-13.

Within the first minute of the second quarter the game was tied 20-20 after a pair of free throws from Shelby Sheridan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) and two jump shots and a three-pointer from the Gators.  Both teams battled it out for the lead in the next two and a half minutes until Carlson banked in a layup allowing the Hornets to keep the lead in the remaining minutes of the first half, ending it 42-35.

Thompson started the half for the Hornets with a jump shot with Taylor Martin soon responding.  After a layup by Hodge, the Gators went on a 9-0 run, tying the game up 46-46 at the 5:08 mark.  Harmon pitched in a jump shot for the Hornets grabbing the lead for them again.  Closing out the third quarter, the Gators answered with a 7-3 run, putting the score in their favor, 53-51.

It all came down to the fourth and final quarter.  In the first five minutes, the Gators deposited eight to the Hornets three, for a 61-54 advantage.  The Hornets were then able to tie it up again 62-62 after a pair of jump shots by Thompson, a jump shot by Jillian Clark (Thetford, Vt.), and a layup by Carlson and while holding the Gators to just one foul shot.  With two and a half minutes remaining, it was anybody's game.  Capitalizing at the free-throw line, the Gators seized a 66-63 victory.
