LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's basketball Team (2-6, 1-2 NAC) continued North Atlantic Conference action against the Castleton University Spartans (8-1, 4-1 NAC), giving the Spartans their third straight win and fourth win of conference play, dropping the contest 49-32.
With the start of the contest, both teams were coming off of a conference win from Thursday night. Castleton upset Johnson with a 62-51 victory and Lyndon outplayed Green Mountain with a thrilling score of 74-54.
To start off the first half, the Spartans quickly added points to the board, only seven seconds into the game with a jump shot by Lindsay Sabo (Stanhope, N.J.). It was a stand-still until Aimee Thompson (Barnet, Vt.) deposited a layup two and a half minutes later. Tied up at 4-4, the Spartans then went on a 10-0 run, until the Hornets could answer back with a jump-shot by Marley Harmon (Buxton, Maine). The Hornets were able to continue to add points to the board, but could not stop the Spartans, ending the half 23-12.
Within the first minute of the second half, the Spartans added a layup and a three point shot by Amanda Beatty (Williston, Vt.) and Jade Desroches (Berkshire, Vt.), respectively. Throughout the rest of the third quarter the Hornets brought about a new energy, cutting the lead down to eight with a pair of three-pointers by Brittney LaFreniere (Randolph, Vt.) and a jump-shot by Victoria Carlson (East Haven, Conn.). The Spartans didn't let down going into the fourth quarter. They were able to extend their lead as high as 22 points in the quarter. The Spartans left with their third straight win, upsetting the Hornets 49-32.
LaFreniere led the offense for the Hornets with nine points. Carlson added seven points, four rebounds, and two steals. Both Abby Salvadore (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.) contributed 10 rebounds and three points.
The Spartans were led by Desroches with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Beatty added 6 points, 14 rebounds, and 2 blocks while Bryanna duPont pitched in 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals.
Both teams will not be hitting the court again until January. The Castleton Spartans will host match-up against the Norwich Cadets on Saturday, January 2nd at 1:00PM.
The Lyndon Hornets travel to face-off against New England College in another Conference game on Tuesday, January 5th at 5:30PM.
