Hornets down Eagles in conference tilt

POULTNEY, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's basketball team picked up their first conference victory of the season with a 74-54 win at Green Mountain College Thursday night.

The Hornets came out hot to start the game and rushed out to a 19-10 lead after an Allison Brown (Monroe, N.H.) three-pointer with 3:07 left in the first quarter.  The visitors would take a 22-14 going into the first break.

Green Mountain opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to close the gap to three at 24-21 at the 8:32 mark.  The Hornets answered with a 13-0 run before taking a 42-30 lead into halftime behind 12 points from senior Aimee Thompson (Barnet, Vt.).

Lyndon held the hosts to just seven points in the third quarter to gain the 58-37 advantage and putting the game out of reach.

Thompson finished the game with 18 points on 9 of 14 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds while Brown added twelve points and six rebounds.  Faith Richard (Acushnet, Mass.), Marley Harmon (Buxton, Maine), and Abby Salvadore (Portsmouth, N.H.) chipped in 10 points apiece while Salvadore also added six boards and five assists on the night.

The Eagles were led by Torie Cowell with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Sherelle Jackson recorded 15 points, five rebounds, and seven assists.

Lyndon (2-5, 1-1 NAC) hosts Castleton Saturday at 1:00 p.m. as they continue conference play.  Green Mountain (0-6, 0-4 NAC) travels to play Johnson at the same time.
