LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College softball team hosted the University of Maine-Presque Isle Saturday afternoon in non-conference action, coming up shy 5-4 in game one and going scoreless game two, 8-0.
The Owls quickly scored a run in the top of first inning after a triple from Carly Bell plated Hannah Williams. Both teams would be held scoreless until the top of third.
After a grounder from Bell and a sacrifice fly from Kathryn Patenaude, Nicole Marucci and Williams scored, giving the Owls the 3-0 advantage. In the bottom of the third the Hornets were able to earn two runs. Shelby Sheridan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) hit to center field, allowing Hannah Choiniere (Highgate, Vt.) to get from second to home. Then Cori Sousa (Amherst, N.H.) grounded out to first to score Sheridan.
Rounding the top of the fourth, the Owls' Marucci batted in two players finishing out their scoring of the game at five.
In the bottom of the fifth, Lily Stinehour (Lunenberg, Vt.) hit a double, knocking in Sheridan to bring the deficit to 5-3. Stinehour then scored on Sousa's single to the outfield.
The following innings remained scoreless, allowing the Owls the 5-4 win.
Sara Packard earned the complete-game win for the Owls, giving up seven hits and four earned runs while striking out six.
Sheridan took the loss for the Hornets allowing seven hits, four earned runs, and striking out two.
Sousa had a solid offensive game for the Hornets going 2-for-4 at the plate and two RBIs.
Williams started strong for the Owls with a homerun in the first at-bat of the second game to give them a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
Neither team scored until the top of the third when the Owls' Sara Packard and Dalynn Jacobs scored another two runs.
The Hornets were able to hold the Owls scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning.
At the top of the sixth, Jacobs knocked in two runs and Jessica Campbell hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Packard to put the Owls up 6-0.
In the final inning, the Owls gained two more runs before holding the Hornets scoreless, to take the 8-0 win.
Packard gained another win in the circle for the Owls allowing four hits while striking out eight.
Kiya DeWitt (Pittsburg, N.H.) took the loss in 5.1 innings of work, allowing eleven hits, five earned runs while striking out four. Brandi Surridge (East Burke, Vt.) relieved DeWitt allowing one hit and one earned run while pitching 1.2 innings.
Sheridan, Sousa, Mindy Carl (Newport, N.H.), and DeWitt each recorded a hit for the Hornets.
The Hornets (2-14, 0-2 NAC) return to the field Sunday at noon for a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Husson University.
