Hornets lose two in home opener

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College softball hosted Castleton University Wednesday afternoon for their first home games of the 2016 season, falling in both contests, 17-1 and 24-1 in five innings each.

Game 1

The first game saw steady scoring from the visitors as the Spartans put up multiple runs in each of the five innings, highlighted by a six runs in the top of the fifth inning.  The Hornets were able to plate their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Kiya DeWitt (Pittsburg, N.H.) took home when the Spartans tried to catch Hannah Choiniere (Highgate, Vt.) stealing second.

Choiniere, Mindy Carl (Newport, N.H.), Brooke Dolloff (Rumford, Maine), and Julia Kearney all recorded a hit for the Hornets.

Game 2

In the second game the Spartans broke out 16 runs in the second inning on their way to the 24-1 victory.  Katie Gagne, Chelsea Grady, and Ruby Bushey all knocked homers in the inning.

Cori Sousa (Amherst, N.H.) singled in the bottom of the third inning to bring in Lily Stinehour (Lunenberg, Vt.) for Lyndon's lone run of the game.

Sousa finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate while Stinehour doubled and Carl and DeWitt each singled in the game.

The Hornets (2-12, 0-2 NAC) host UMaine-Presque Isle Saturday at noon for a non-conference doubleheader.

The Spartans (8-8, 3-1 NAC) host Thomas College Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for a doubleheader.
