CLERMONT, Fla. – The Lyndon State College softball team continued play in Florida Thursday morning with a 20-0 (5 innings) loss to Augustana College.
Lily Stinehour (Lunenberg, Vt.) led the Hornets offense going 2 for 3 at the plate with two singles. Brooke Dolloff (Rumford, Maine) added a single in her two at bats on the day as the Hornets left five runners on base.
The Vikings were led by Shelby Grandt who went 2-for-4, scored three runs, and batted in two. Amanda Ebert went 2-for-3 from the plate while batting in three runs and scoring twice.
Despite a hit from each team, the first inning ended scoreless. Augustana's Carly Wilson doubled to center to score the first run of the game. Jordan Arndt followed with an RBI single to put the Vikings up 2-0 after the top of the second inning.
The Vikings would go on to plate six, nine, and three runs in the next three innings to take the game 20-0.
Kiya DeWitt (Pittsburg, N.H.) took the loss in three innnings on the mound for the Hornets, giving up five hits and eight runs (four earned). Ashlynn Royce (Danville, Vt.) relieved DeWitt to finish the game, surrendering seven hits and 12 runs, all of which were unearned.
Grandt picked up the win for the Vikings in three innings of work.
In the second game of the day, the Lyndon softball team rallied to tie up the game in the top of the seventh inning before falling 7-6 to Houghton College on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Brooke Dolloff and Corrina Cota singled for the Hornets before Hannah Choiniere was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out in the top of the seventh. Kiya DeWitt then tripled to score all three to bring the Hornets within a run. Shelby Sheridan followed with a groundout to second to plate DeWitt for the tying run.
The Highlanders answered with two singles before sacrificing the runners over to second and third. Ashley Schenk then singled home a run to give the Highlanders the 7-6 win.
Lyndon found themselves down four after the first two innings but picked up a run in the fifth off a monstrous triple from Cota that plated Dolloff. The Hornets picked up another run in the top of the sixth before Houghton answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to push their lead back up to four at 6-2.
The Hornets were led by Dolloff who went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs. Cota also went 2-for-3 while recording one run and one RBI.
Sheridan pitched five innings giving up 13 runs and four earned runs while striking out four in a no decision. Brandi Surridge took the loss in 1.1 innings of relief, surrendering five hits and three earned runs.
Tanya Hatton pitched 6.1 innings giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out four. Taylor Sile picked up the win after pitching 0.2 of an inning, allowing two hits and two runs.
The Hornets take on Southwestern University at 9:00 a.m. before facing Houghton again at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow.
