BANGOR, Maine – The Lyndon softball team placed third at the North Atlantic Conference Championships by virtue of winning one of three games held at Husson University.
Game 1 – Castleton 6, Lyndon 0
Castleton shut out Lyndon in 7 innings of play in game two of the NAC softball championship tournament at O'Keefe Softball Complex.
The first inning went scoreless before Castleton State College jumped ahead with the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Brittany Brayman started off the inning with a single through the right side. Tori Fearon followed that at bat, reaching first on a fielder's choice and would advance to third on a throwing error by third base. Brayman would come all the way around from first to score.
The Spartans added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Chelsea Grady tripled to left center with the bases loaded, scoring Leah Van Buren, Fearon, and Stephanie Sylvester. Ruby Bushey pinch hit in the next at bat, grounding out to second base but would be credited with the RBI as Grady crossed the plate.
Castleton added the sixth and final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as S. Sylvester reached first on a fielding error by the first baseman which scored T. Fearon from second.
Taylor Lively picked up her 12th win of the season in the circle for the Spartans. Lively was credited with the no-hitter as she registered 13 strike outs in seven innings pitched.
Katie Davis (North Haverhill, N.H.) manned the circle for the Hornets, allowing seven hits with five strike outs and two walked batters. Davis allowed six runs four of which were earned.
Game 2 –Lyndon 3, UMaine-Farmington 2
Lyndon scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 3-2 upset win over fifth-seeded Farmington.
Farmington got on the board early as they took the 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Shelby Bryant singled to the shortstop and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Emily Soule reached first on balls. The runners on first and second advanced on a passed ball followed by Kaitlyn Bartlett grounding out to second base. Bartlett recorded the RBI in the at bat as Bryant scored from third.
The Beavers added another run in the top of the third as Bartlett singled up the middle driving in Bryant from second. Bryant had reached first previously on a balls.
Lyndon cut the Beaver lead to one in the bottom of the third on a Katie Ste. Marie (North Troy, Vt.) single up the middle which scored Ashley Barski (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) from second. Barski previously reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop.
The teams went scoreless in the next two innings before the Hornets took the 3-2 lead on a single through the left side by Katie Davis (North Haverhill, N.H.) in the bottom of the sixth. Jen Lynch (Portland, Maine) started the inning off with a single to the shortstop followed by Taylor Young (Lowell, Mass.) reaching on a fielding error by the third baseman. Katie Davis drove in Young and Lynch on the no out single.
Davis got her second consecutive start in the circle for the Hornets as she went the full seven innings. She allowed five hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts and two walked batters.
Emily Soule was in the circle for the Beavers as she went six innings, allowing six hits with three runs one of which was earned. Soule also registered three strikeouts in the game.
Game 3 – Castleton 8, Lyndon 0
Castleton defeated Lyndon 8-0 in five innings in Game 5 of the North Atlantic Conference Softball Championship.
Castleton's offense started early when the first batter of the game, Chelsea Crehan walked and then advanced to second base on a pass ball. The next batter Kristy Pinkham singled to the pitcher, advancing Crehan to third. Jessica Babcock reached on a walk loading the bases. Brittany Brayman singled up the middle, batting in two RBIs.
With Babcock on 2nd and Brayman on 1st, Tori Fearon reached on a fielding error. Stephanie Sylvester flied out to center field, scoring Brayman to make it 4-0 Spartans. Chelsea Grady doubled to right field to score Fearon, extending it to 5-0.
Castleton pitched Taylor Lively struck out the side making it a quick turnaround for the Spartans offense who put up 2 more runs in the top of the 2nd to make it 7-0 when Fearon reached on an error scoring Pinkham who singled and Crehan who walked.
In the top if the 4th Castleton added one more run when Fearon singled again up the middle, scoring Brayman to make it 8-0.
The Hornets were unable to muster any offense and after 5 innings the game was final.
Katie Davis (North Haverhill, N.H.) who had a strong tournament bid got the loss in the circle going five innings, allowing eight hits. Lively earned the win for the Spartans after a shut out three innings and Emily Sweeney pitched the final two innings allowing just one hit.
For their outstanding performances, Lyndon's Katie davis and Jena Finnegan were named to the All-Tournament Team.
