Canton, NY - The Lyndon State College men's soccer team traveled to SUNY Canton for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night. Aftr 90 scoreless minutes, Canton's Edward Malinowski (Evans Mills, NY) scored the game winner three minutes into overtime to give the Roos a 1-0 victory. Canton mproves to 6-6-1 on the season, while the Hornets fall to 5-6-1.
Canton got the better of the play in the opening half, outshooting the Hornets, 5-2. Despite the shot disadvantage, Lyndon managed the only shot on goal of the half, but Liam Kelleher (Manchester, VT) was denied by Roo goalkeeper Connor Campbell (Glasgow, Scotland) in the 43rd minute.
Play opened up somewhat in the second half, with Canton again getting the better of the play and holding a 9-3 advantage in shots. The Roos' Hector Martinez (Bakersfield, CA) nearly broke through, hitting the crossvar in the 50th minute. Just over four minutes later the Hornets had an opportunity, but Campbell stopped Abukar Hassan's (Kenya) shot. The Roos also had a chance in the final minute of regulation, but Hornet goalkeeper Matt LaClair (Beekmantown, NY) stopped Connor Bruyn's (Poughquag, NY) header.
In the extra session Canton had a chance a minute in, but Marc Ramirez (La Puente, CA) sailed a shot high. That set the stage for Malinowski's heroics. Canton's Josh Geller (Monroe, NY) beat his defender on the right side and served up a perfect ball in front that Malinowski was able to knock home to give the Roos the win.
The Hornets return to North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday with a 4:00 pm start at Thomas College. Canton will travel to Castleton University on Saturday.
