Lyndonville, VT - Junior forward William Martin (Sherborn, MA) found the back of the net in the 78th minute to give the Lyndon State College Hornets a come from behind 2-1 victory over Southern Vermont College on Tuesday afternoon. The non-conference victory raises Lyndon's overall record to 5-3-1, while Southern Vermont falls to 3-9.
In the game's 15th minute Southern Vermont's Jared Lacoste (Arlington, VT) made a nice run after recieving a through ball, but was denied by Hornet goalkeeper Matt LaClair (Beekmantown, NY). Lacoste was able to poke the rebound past LaClair to give the Mountaineers the early lead.
Lyndon would get the equalizer in the 35th minute, as Abukar Hassan (Kenya) rifled a shot by Southern Vermont goalkeeper Dylan Berg (Tampa, FL), his third goal of the season. Nate Kolash (Dubois, PA) picked up the assist with a nice feed to Hassan. That made the score 1-1 heading into halftime.
Neither team was able to find the net for a good portion of the second half as the game got increasingly physical and chippy. Southern Vermont was issued four yellow cards, wile the Hornets received two yellow cards and a red card.
Lyndon kept the pressure on the Mountaineers, and in the 78th minute Joshua Thibault (Glover, VT) threaded a pass to Martin, setting him up for the game winner. It was Martin's second goal of the season.
The Hornets outshot the Mountaineers, 29-19. LaClair stopped nine of ten shots on goal, while Berg recorded six saves.
Lyndon returns to the pitch this weekend as they get back into North Atlantic conference play with a pair of home contests. On Saturday, Colby-Sawyer College comes to Varsity Field, and on Sunday New England College comes in. Both games will kick off at 3:30 pm. Southern vermont will host Becker College on Saturday.
