Lyndonville, VT - The Lyndon State College men's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season as they recorded a 4-0 non-conference win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls on Varsity Field on Saturday afternoon. The Owls remain winless at 0-3 on the season.
Junior Abukar Hassan (Kenya) got Lyndon on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute when he converted a penalty kick following a foul in the box. It was Hassan's 2nd goal of the young season.
The Owls were whistled for a hand ball in the box in the 40th minute. Senior midfielder Nat Kolash (Dubois, PA) converted the resulting penalty kick to make it 2-0 Hornets. Lyndon took that advantage into the halftime break.
Neither team was able to break through for much of the second half. Kolash received a red card in the 77th minute, forcing the Hornets to play short handed for the final 13 minutes.
Despite being a man down the Hornets able to tack on two late goals in the final six minutes of the contest. Senior Liam Kelleher (Manchester, VT) scored off of a feed from junior Eric Remick (Danville, VT) to make it 3-0 Hornets. Senior Bradley Shumway (Bloomingdale, NY) closed out the scoring by finding the back of the net with less than two minutes remaining.
Senior goalkeeper Matt LaClair (Beekmantown, NY) had a relatively quiet day in goal, as he was only called on to make two saves on his way to the shutout. Maine Presque Isle goalkeeper Matthew Manter stopped 11 of 15 shots on goal. For the game the Hornets outshot the Owls, 26-9.
The Hornets are off until next Saturday, when they will open North Atlantic Conference play at the University of Maine at Farmington. That game will kick off at 1:30 pm. Lyndon's next home contest will be on Saturday, September 23rd, when they host Castleton State University in another NAC matchup. That game is set to start at 1:00 pm.
