SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Lyndon State College men's lacrosse team battled with Houghton College Tuesday afternoon, but came up short in the 10-8 loss.
The Hornets got on the board first as Kevin McCarthy (West Sayville, N.Y.) scored in under five minutes of play. Less than two minutes later, Ian Pelkey (Milton, Vt.) found Zachary Carey (Exeter, N.H.) for another score to put Lyndon up 2-0. The Highlanders answered quickly with three goal in less than two minutes to take the lead with 6:33 to play in the first quarter. The first two coming from Austin Andryshak and the third from Paul Chapman, assisted by Nathan Moore. With just 38 seconds left in the quarter, Lyndon's Brandon Hunter (Glastonbury, Conn.) would knot up the score 3-3.
The Hornets' momentum continued into the second quarter as Shea Jones (Hull, Mass.) picked up a goal at the 13:30 mark. Both teams were then held scoreless for over 11 minutes until Andryshak posted his third goal of the game to tie the score 4-4 with 1:57 to play in the first half.
Andryshak would strike first for the Highanders in the second half before the teams would alternate goals twice. Houghton would take a 7-6 lead into the final quarter.
Paul Chapman gave the Highlanders an 8-6 lead, the biggest lead of the day for either team, when he scored off an assist from Josh Bailey with 12:15 left in the game. Pelkey found Carey as the Hornets cut the lead to 8-7 with just under eight minutes to play. The Higlanders stretched the lead back to two with a goal from Cole Chapman, again assisted by Bailey. Lyndon answered quickly again as Spencer Aubin (Sharon, Mass.) found Colin Young (Sharon, Vt.) for the goal and a 9-8 score. Paul Chapman would increase the gap again for Houghton with his goal at the 2:37 mark.
Despite two attacks in the final minutes, the Hornets were unable to capitalize, giving the Highlanders the 10-8 victory.
McCarthy led the Hornets with a hat trick while Carey added two goals. Pelkey finished with two assists. Shane Morin (Salem, N.H.) gave up four goals while making four saves in 30 minutes of work in goal. Marcus Bessette (Pembroke, N.H.) took over in goal at the half giving up six goals and making six saves to take the loss.
Andryshak led all scorers with five goals for the Highlanders. Paul Chapman added four goals while Bailey recorded two assist. Chris Bucciarelli took the win in net allowing eight goals and recording ten saves.
The Hornets (0-3) open up conference play at Husson University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Highlanders (1-4) play at Anna Maria College Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
