WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Lyndon State College baseball team finished up their Florida trip with a 7-2 comeback victory over Iowa Wesleyan University Monday morning at the Chain of Lakes Stadium. The Hornets improve to 6-4 on the year.
Freshman Codi Smith smashed a double and a triple while batting in three runs and scoring once to lead the Hornets. Catcher Jason Doris came off the bench to go 2-for-2 from the plate with two RBIs and one run. Senior Nate Stewart also cracked two hits and scored once. Jeff Williams received the no decision in the start for the Hornets, going three innings, fanning seven batters, and giving up two runs on three hits. Tyler Davis pitched three innings in relief, allowing just one hit, to pick up the win. Jake Jourdain, Ben Rollins, and Andrew Whalen each pitched one shutout inning.
The Tigers struck early, plating a run off of a single and then scoring on a double play attempt up the middle with the runner just barely making it safely to first.
The 2-0 score held until the bottom of the fifth when the Hornets put seven runs on the board. Smith walked to start the inning and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Chris April. A fly out tallied the second out of the inning but Devon Rollins drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Ryan Cordeiro singled in Smith and moved Rollins to second. Andre Eason Jr. followed with a single to center to plate Rollins and then advanced to an open second base on the throw into the infield. A third straight single came from Doris, scoring Cordeiro and Eason. Stewart and Michael Pena kept the inning going with a single and a walk before Smith, in his second at bat of the inning, tripled over the rightfielder's head to score all three baserunners.
From there the Hornets' bullpen did their job, shutting out the Tigers for the next four innings to secure the 7-2 victory.
The Hornets will travel to Eastern Nazarene on Saturday, March 18 for a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
