WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Lyndon State College baseball team started off the 2017 season on a high note, topping Finlandia University 20-3 Tuesday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida.
Senior Devon Rollins (Winooski, Vt.) had a monstrous day at the plate for the Hornets (1-0), knocking in six runs and scoring three runs while smashing a triple and a grand slam to go 3-for-6 at the plate. Ryan Cordeiro (Rollinsford, N.H.) went 5-for-6 with three runs and one RBI while newcomer Trevor Markey (Ocoee, Fla.) batted in two runs, scored twice, and went 3-for-5. Freshman Chris April (Rollinsford, N.H.) had a solid debut going 3-for-4, scoring twice, and batting in a run.
Joey Krug led the Lions (1-4) with a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Josh Gregory finished the day with one hit and two runs.
Jeff Williams (Gilsum, N.H.) recorded the win for Lyndon throwing six innings while allowing three earned runs on five hits and striking out nine. Jake Jourdain (Becket, Mass.), Dennis Farnham (Orono, Maine), and Matt Page (Groton, Vt.) each pitched one inning in relief and held the Lions hitless.
Steven Guberti took the loss for the Lions in 3.1 innings of work, allowing six earned runs on nine hits.
The Hornets meet Cabrini at Lake Myrtle Park for a doubleheader Wednesday starting at 11:00 a.m.
